Meet Our Founding Member Author: Jayne A. Fox and The Copper Goddess
Every platform has to start somewhere. indie-author.com starts here - with a fox, a goddess, and a lab technician from Manchester who has no idea what he's just walked into.
The Copper Goddess is a debut novella by Jayne A. Fox, and it's the first book to get a home on indie-author.com. Jayne is our founding author in the fullest sense: she was heavily involved in building this site as well as writing the book. We built the thing we needed - a proper home page for a book, and a way to stay in touch with the people who read it - and then we used it first.
The Book
Victor is twenty-five, works in a private pathology lab, and spends his weekends walking the fells of the Lake District. He is, by most measures, unremarkable, and would be the first to say so.
Then he stops to free a fox caught in a wire snare.
The fox is Sina - a goddess, as it turns out, and not an especially patient one. Her gratitude arrives as a gift Victor never asked for and can't return. Over the weeks that follow he is warmer in the cold, faster in the mornings and, embarrassingly, getting taller. His clothes stop fitting. His features soften. His hair turns the copper-red of a fox at dusk.
Victor is becoming Victoria, and the story follows her from the backstreets of Manchester to the shores of Lake Como - through a modelling career she didn't plan, a friendship that turns into something else, and a deadline she doesn't learn about until it's nearly run out.
Why We Like It
It's a transformation story that stays small where it counts. The magic is real, but so is the business of working out why the buttons are on the wrong side of the shirt, and what to say to a colleague who has noticed you're four inches taller than you were last month.
The heart of it is Astrid - Victoria's best friend of seven years, a fashion influencer with a sharp eye and sharper opinions, who spots what's happening before anyone else and decides to help rather than flinch. Their friendship carries the book. The romance is slow, earned, and worth the wait.
If you like your fantasy grounded, your settings damp and northern, and your love stories patient, this one's for you.
About Jayne A. Fox
Jayne writes contemporary fantasy set in the northwest of England - the Lake District she walks in, the Manchester she knows. The Copper Goddess is her first published work, and there's more coming: a longer version of Victoria's story, and several unrelated projects at various stages of falling apart and being put back together.
She writes under a pen name for the usual reasons, and has no plans to explain them.
About indie-author.com
indie-author.com gives independent authors two things that are unreasonably hard to arrange on your own: a clean, fast home page for each book, and a mailing list that actually belongs to you.
No theme wrangling. No plugin stack. No renting your readership from an algorithm that changes its mind every other month. You write the book; we'll handle the shelf it sits on.
We're opening up to more authors soon. If you'd like to be among the next few, join the wait list - and you'll hear from us before anyone else.
Read The Copper Goddess, or sign up to hear when Jayne's next book lands.
